Minnesota Wireless Association Fact Sheet

Minnesota Wireless Association Mission Statement

The Minnesota Wireless Association (MWA) is a club that promotes Radiosporting (Radio Contesting) in the geographic region in and near Minnesota. Members in MWA range from the new or inexperienced contester to the veteran top ten contester. The primary objective of MWA is to compete against other radiosporting clubs in North America in events that have a club competition and in the process promote Amateur Radio Contesting including assisting contesting newcomers. To support this objective, MWA recruits new members within our region and assists all members to improve their score, skill and enjoyment of the sport.

Officers

The 2008-2009 officers of the Minnesota Wireless Association are:

MWA Intra-Club Team Competition

To help improve MWA’s club competition score and to encourage participation in contests, MWA hosts an Intra-Club Team Competition. For the competition, MWA members are placed on internal teams to compete against each other during the contest season in select contests. The team winning the competition will have its pizza paid for by the other teams at MWA’s annual Fall meeting.

All MWA members are eligible to participate in the team competition. MWA’s members residing within the 175 mile ARRL and CQ club competition circle must submit their scores to ARRL or CQ and must list MINNESOTA WIRELESS ASSN as their affiliated club for their scores to count for the intra-club team competition.

Contests currently included in the intra-club team competition are:

CQWW RTTY
CQWW Phone
ARRL SS CW
ARRL SS Phone
CQWW CW
ARRL 160 Meter
ARRL 10 Meter
ARRL RTTY Roundup
Minnesota QSO Party
ARRL International DX CW
ARRL International DX Phone

MWA Email Reflector

The MWA Email Reflector is open to all MWA members and all members are encouraged to join the reflector.

Individuals who do not meet MWA’s membership requirements and are considered friends of MWA, or who have interest or other ties to MWA, may request access to the MWA reflector. The reflector moderator, or MWA’s Board of Directors, will review non-member requests individually for their merit.

The MWA Email Reflector is the primary method for MWA members to communicate with each other, and is the primary method for distributing news and information to MWA members. For details on joining the Email Reflector, check the Email Reflector on the Club’s web site home page at www.w0aa.org.

What About Meetings?

MWA has one major meeting each year, typically in late September and held in the Twin City area. Occasionally regional meetings are held in other areas of the state. The primary method MWA members stay in touch is through the email reflector, mentioned above.

MWA Membership Requirements

MWA members reside or operate within the state of Minnesota. Members outside of Minnesota must reside or operate within the club competition circle. The club competition circle is a circle of 175 mile radius with center determined by the MWA Board of Directors and posted on MWA’s web site (currently near St Cloud).

Members are expected to be active in club affairs and in radiosporting. Active participation is considered participation in radiosporting events, active participation on the club email “reflector”, submitting contest logs to contest sponsors, attendance at club meetings or gatherings, or active in the leadership or operation of MWA. Members residing or operating within the MWA’s club competition circle shall list MINNESOTA WIRELESS ASSN as their affiliated contest club for ARRL and CQ contests that are part of the MWA Intra-Club Team Competition.

How Competitive is the MWA?

The MWA ranks in the upper tier of contest clubs throughout the country. We usually put forth our biggest effort in the ARRL Sweepstakes and score consistently among the top clubs in the Unlimited Category. For example, in the 2007 ARRL Sweepstakes, the MWA scored 4th out of 69 clubs throughout the nation. The only clubs scoring higher than the MWA were the Northern California Contest Club, the Potomac Valley Radio Club, and the Society of Midwest Contesters. The MWA also competes as a team in the ARRL 160 and 10 Meter Contests, the CQWW Contests, NA QSO party, and various Sprints.

Is there a Club Call?

The MWA club callsign is WØAA. This call is available for members to use, primarily in multi-op contest efforts. KØTO is the trustee of the WØAA license. Contact KØTO for more information.
